What arthritis is
Why joints become painful and stiff.
Arthritis means inflammation of the joints, causing pain, stiffness and sometimes swelling. It's not one disease but a group of conditions.
Two common types
- Osteoarthritis: 'wear and repair' of joint cartilage, common with age.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: the immune system attacks the joints.
Knowing which type you have shapes the right treatment, so a proper diagnosis matters.
